How Mercedes-Benz names their vehicles?

Do you ever wonder how this company names its vehicles, for instance with letters like CLA, GLA, GLE, etc.?

Many models changed their names through time, for example, GL became the GLS.

If you have just been introduced to the brand, or, if you are only familiar with older models, the new names can seem a little confusing.

Nonetheless, Benz names its models to help customers to distinguish among them and the name always has a perfect reason behind it.

  • CL in model names
  • SL in model names
  • GL in model names

They have five core models that are crucial in the name classification. These models are A, B, C, E, and S.

The additional letters applied to the core model also have their own meaning.

For example, the CL in models such as CLS and CLA stands for 4-door coupe, and therefore, it is only added to the models who have a 4-door coupe.

The models with SL represent Roadster vehicle. Roadster vehicles usually have a hardtop convertible roof, and they are two-seater vehicles. Examples are the SL and SLC.

A lot of models have GL in their names, like the GLS, GLE, GLC, and GLA.

The GL notes that a model belongs to the well-known G-Class SUV, the leading SUV in its series. So, any model that has GL in its name will be considered as an SUV.

After all, many names have been changed, for example, the GLK is now the GLC, the ML is renamed to the GLE, and the GL is now the GLS.

Mercedes limousine rental will be easier now when you know this information. It will be simpler to decide which model is for you.

Classes

Here we will list the Mercedes-Benz classes and note their most important features:

  • A-Class
  • B-Class
  • CLA-Class
  • C-Class
  • E-Class
  • S-Class
  • G-Class
  • GLE-Class (formerly M-Class)
  • SL-Class

The A-Class

The A-class indicated the original Mercedes in classical size. It was firstly introduced in 1997, with a compact front-driver, probably not instantly distinguished as this automaker to Americans.

The original model looked like a mix of Honda Fit and a Smart ForTwo, perfectly logical since they also create Smart.

The modern version looks like Mazda3, and it is not a part of the North American Market, and probably won’t be because in 2013 the CLA-Class started to be sold in the European market.

The B-Class

The B-Class is a bit enlarged version of the A-Class with a more powerful engine. In all other ways, it is identical to the A-Class.

The CLA-Class, also labeled as “the only Benz under $30,000 (25,333€)”, represents the modern version of the European A-Class with different engines, new sheet metal, and with a powertrain capable of providing power to all its wheels.

The SL-Class

The SL-Class is not in any way related to the S-Class. The name stands for “Sport Light” and perfectly describes this type of vehicle.

The SLK roadster is smaller and cheaper, the SLS is the modern version of the classic “gullwing” 300SL, while the SLR has the following features: AMG-built, 622-horsepower, and 6.2-liter engine.

There are several models that are produced in most classes, but they differ in engine size and/or fuel type.

History of Mercedes-Benz

“Everything begins with an idea.”

Earl Nightingale

In 1886, Carl Benz presented the “Motorwagen“, one of the most fascinating inventions of the time. Since then, costumers rely on Mercedes-Benz vehicles to make their drive luxurious and stylish, wherever they go.

From humble beginnings, the brand quickly grew into the leading role in the car industry.

This is because it is mainly focused on innovations and expanding the limits, providing its costumers’ only the best.

In 1901, Gottlieb Daimler launched a vehicle that he named the Mercedes. The pioneering 35hp vehicle with the Honeycomb Radiator was designed by Wilhelm Maybach and Emil Jellinek.

Gottlieb Daimler was also the creator of the first gas-powered engine, specially designed for automobiles.

This famous brand exists for more than 120 years and boasts a rich heritage.

Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) and Benz & Cie united, together becoming “Mercedes-Benz Automobile GmbH”, in summer of 1926.

Daimler designed the first motorcycle and later he created his own automobile. Both were designed with the help of Wilhelm Maybach, another important name in automotive history.

The two, now merged, automotive manufacturers presented their first product in October at the 1926 Berlin Motor Show.

They exhibited the first jointly developed passenger car models produced by their brand name: the 8/38 hp two-liter car (W 02) and the 12/55 hp three-liter model (W 03). The following year was highly productive, with 7 000 produced cars.

“The best or nothing.”

Gottlieb Daimler coined the famous motto “Das Beste oder Nichts”, meaning “The best or nothing”.

He chose the perfect words, since the brand really fulfilled its mission through decades, continuously providing only the best in the car industry.

Nowadays, the Daimler group operates with five business units: Cars, Vans, Daimler Trucks, Daimler Buses, and Daimler Financial Services.

Daimler AG is the manufacturer with a vast line of commercial vehicles along with high-class private vehicle production.

Mercedes-Benz Logo

The epic three-point star emblem was not the original logo of the company.

There were different logo designs, with 2 most distinctive. The first one was created in 1909 by the Benz & Cie, and it was the “Benz” lettering surrounded by a laurel wreath.

When the two companies merged in 1926, they choose the tree point star surrounded by a solid silver circle to be their logo.

What does the Mercedes-Benz logo mean?

With this logo, the company wanted that their engine dominates over the 3 – land, sea, and air, which represents the 3 point star.

The logo perfectly matches with their motto – universal production with THE BEST motors.

Maybach

The Maybach brand represents the ultimate luxury, highest comfort, and top technology features, services, and accessories, synonymous with class and status.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Wilhelm Maybach, the man who gave it its name, was producing models that mixed pioneering technologies and the finest design.

Maybach went out of business in the 1940s, but at the beginning of the 21st century (in 2003) it was brought back to the market to even rival Roll Royce.

The models they were producing looked like the typical S-class, and they were considered overpriced, so no one was buying them.

That was the reason why Mercedes canceled the Maybach project.

Nevertheless, the fact that they still possessed the Maybach name, made them change their tactics – they stopped making separate Maybach products. Instead, it became a regular model of their car brand.

The first step was made with the S-class and resulted in two versions: V8 and V12.

Conclusion:

When you think of the Mercedes-Benz brand, the first association must be the ideal automobile.

This isn’t without a reason, through decades the brand fulfilled its motto: “The best or nothing”.

Many people choose to purchase or hire these vehicles.

What makes it unique and successful in the luxury automobile class?

Here are just a few out of the many things that make the brand one of a kind:

  • Luxury
  • Safety
  • Performance
  • Service
  • Selection

Always synonymous with high-quality, safety, comfort, and the latest innovations, Mercedes-Benz will never disappoint its customers.

The brand is ultimately the TITAN IN LUXURY TRANSPORTATION and the best driving experience.
